  • Description

The Sumo Kumo is the big sibling of the Kumamoto Oyster and is twice the size and twice as wise. With age comes beauty and refined flavor. The Sumo is perfect for the Kumo connoisseur, and also holds its own on the grill. Try this rare "unicorn" of an oyster before they're gone!
Our Kumamotos or "Kumos" are grown from mid-century, heirloom seeds rarely found outside Chapman's Cove, WA. Their heritage dates to the original Japanese imports from the late 1940s. Our Kumo is a gently, fulfilling oyster with remarkably consistent growth patterns. Their salted honeydew meat fills up the deep cupped shells, brimming with sweet liquor.

    Quantity: 30 count
Flavor Profile: Honey melon and sweet lime notes. Juicy, mouthwatering oyster with a little brine and a pleasant sweetness.
    Size: Approximately 2.5 - 3 inch shell
    Age: Approximately 4 years matured

    Sumo Kumamotos

Challenging to shuck, but a a great buy. My last batch had one failure, but the extra numbers more than made up for it.

    Sumo Kumo’s

If you’re looking for the best of the best then look no further, the Sumo Kumo’s are it!! My favorite oyster was the Kumamoto, but then I met it’s bigger sibling. Fresh, sweet, and to die for!! I’m in Love. We Have been ordering oysters every month, and can’t seem to stop. They are that good! We are always the hit at dinner parties when we show up with fresh oysters.

    Sumo Kumo

These oysters are fantastic! I ordered them for my husband for Christmas. It was the perfect gift. He is an oyster aficionado and said they are "esoteric." I am not a foodie, but these are some of the best oysters I have ever eaten. We highly recommend them!

We've been ordering oysters from Taylor Shellfish for several years, at least 4 times per year. They always arrive fresh and delicious. My Honey thinks they're the best treat ever! And now our neighbors will be putting in an order when we do, since they absolutely love these things!!!

    Worth the extra $

Kumamotos are generally awesome no matter the size—but it's well worth leveling up in price to get the Sumos, if you want to enjoy live, fresh flavor AND you're hungry.

    Sumo Kumo

They were exceptional this year. Very briny and sweet. Didn’t need any additions.

"I Weep for You," the Walrus Said

Even the Walrus knew that the largest were the tastiest! He sorted those out for himself first keeping them from the Carpenter. Don't bother to put lemon juice on these wonderful oysters, and stop think of them as fodder for grilling. These deserve to be swallowed unadorned, in all their beautiful fresh sea briny glory.
